Community infrastructure money slashed

Leichhardt Councillor Darcy Byrne is calling on the State Government to restore funding for local infrastructure after recent cuts.

Cr Byrne said he will introduce a motion at next month’s Council meeting encouraging the State Government to reverse its 80 per cent cut to the Community Building Partnership.
“The Community Building Partnership is a great initiative that Barry O’Farrell promised to keep. Instead without warning he has slashed funding by 80 per cent,” Mr Byrne said.
“This program provides councils and community groups with much needed funding to undertake local community infrastructure projects, like upgrades of sports facilities, youth and child care centres.”
In 2010 a total of $499,810 was granted to 16 projects within the electorate of Balmain, including the encapsulation of an asbestos roof at the Glebe PCYC and the provision of disability access to St John’s Church Hall in Balmain.
Cr Byrne also attacked Greens member for Balmain Jamie Parker for a lack of action over the cuts.
“It is concerning that the local member has not spoken out or lobbied the Government about these cuts. That is his job after all,” he said.
Mr Parker said he was very concerned about the scheme’s reduction and would continue to work to restore the original funding.
“This program is a great initiative and I look forward to working with community groups and local councils to undertake vital community infrastructure projects,” Mr Parker said.
“The deadline for applications is 31 October and I understand Leichhardt council is yet to make a submission.”
The office of Local Government Minister Don Page did not return calls from the Alternative Media Group.
