Community Consultation Open For Bold New Bondi Junction Plan
Waverley Council has unveiled a “bold” plan which reimagines Bondi Junction as a world-class cultural, civic and commercial town centre with 3,000 new homes, a revamped Oxford Street Mall and major new public and community space.
After a year of development with input and consultation from the community, business and stakeholder groups, the draft master plan is now on exhibition, offering residents a final say before it goes to Council for endorsement.
Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh said that he believes with the right investment and planning, Bondi Junction has the potential to become a truly high‑performing precinct.
“Bondi Junction has all the elements of a high-performing precinct, including a major transport interchange, an excellent location and a premier retail offering, but its full potential has remained untapped for too long,” says Nemesh.
The ambitions of new Bondi Junction plan
The plan is focused on around four core ‘ambitions’:
Ambition 1: Destination
Which plans to shift Bondi Junction from a simple shopping stop, to a lively day-and-night destination with a revitalised nightlife and expanded evening activities.
“It starts with revamping Oxford Street Mall to serve as a daylight hub for shopping, wellbeing, culture and hospitality before transforming into a lively promenade at night with extended dining, live music and major community events,” Nemesh said.
Ambition 2: A world‑class interchange
Centred around a revamped transport system that aims to replace today’s busy and disconnected interchange into an accessible and welcoming gateway for residents and visitors.
“The primary entrance to Bondi Junction station would shift to Rowe Street, providing a direct link between public transport and Oxford Street Mall, making movement between the two safer, quicker and more intuitive,” Nemesh explains.
Ambition 3: An urban oasis
A new “parkline” identity for Bondi Junction as Sydney’s east, linking outdoor spaces and greenery to deliver a more sustainable and welcoming experience.
“A network of urban parks and plazas, plus walking and bike trails, will connect Centennial Park on one side to Waverley Park on the other,” says Nemesh.
Ambition 4: The heart of the East
Plans seek to establish Bondi Junction as the heart of Sydney’s east, expanding housing and lifestyle choices while delivering new homes to support the wider community.
“This plan could deliver 3000 new homes, 10 per cent of which would be earmarked as affordable,” Nemesh said. “But this is not about blanket density, but density done well and scale matched to place, with heritage conservation areas retained.
The plan also details two ‘catalyst projects’ intended to help anchor Bondi Junction’s transformation. An 18-hour Oxford Street mall featuring a new 1500 square metre public square, new housing and office developments, enhanced retail and expanded tree canopy. As well as the Civic Precinct which includes a modern community facility, an expanded Clemenston Park and improved safe pedestrian connections across the area.
“Bondi Junction has huge potential, and this Master Plan serves as a roadmap for making it the beating heart of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs,” says Cr Nemesh.
The draft plan is now available to be viewed publicly, so the community can provide feedback.
