Community cheer as brothel application is withdrawn

The development application for the brothel at 1 Union Street was withdrawn on Thursday.

Chris Ji, who submitted the application, said the location of 1 Union Street did not work for the requirements of the brothel.

“We’re looking at a more suitable property,” he said.

Mr Ji declined to comment further on why the application was withdrawn.

Jeanne Stewart, one of the anti-brothel campaigners, said the application was likely withdrawn due to the barrage of objections sent into council.

City of Sydney Council received 157 objections from Mrs Stewart’s campaign alone. Many more were received privately.

The application was controversial because the community felt it was too close to the war memorial and it did not fit in with the family culture of the square.

Kim White, one of the anti-brothel campaigners said the community are very pleased but they are unsure of whether there will be a repeat submission.

“We have been through this before. If the submission comes back we would be prepared to fight it.”

Mr Ji replied to community concern and said he was searching for a new location outside of the Pyrmont area.

“We wish the Pyrmont community well,” he said.

Madame Kroner, the beauty salon which is located at 1 Union Street, will continue business.
