City workers to outrun cancer

Over a thousand Sydney workers will spend their lunchtime running the City Mile Dash this Friday.

The 1.6km dash around Barangaroo is an initiative by Cancer Council NSW to raise funds and encourage Sydneysiders to get active.

“A third of cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices including regular exercise,” said Cancer Council CEO Dr Andrew Penman.

“This doesn’t mean having to slog it out for hours at the gym – regular bursts of physical activity like City Mile Dash can cut your cancer risk.”

City workers can choose to run individually, as part of a four man team, or to tough it out in a bootcamp challenge and run the mile while carrying a sandbag.

“Anyone can run a mile and it’s for a good cause, so why wouldn’t you get involved?” said cancer survivor Major Matt Carr.

Major Carr was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer at the age of 26.

“I was 10 foot tall and bullet proof. Not only was I trained and well prepared for war, I was looking for a fight,” said Major Carr.

“However cancer was not the type of fight I’d been hoping for.”

Major Carr is challenging city workers to outrun his army boys tomorrow.

“I’ve rallied the troops and they’re chomping at the bit to take on Sydney workers in the dash,” he said.

Teams will be able to choose celebrities to run with them, including former World Ironman Champion Guy Leech and Biggest Loser Series 3 winner Sam Rouen to run with them.

This is an important event for Cancer Council NSW because “one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85,” said Dr Penman.

The City Mile Dash starts at 1pm and will be held at Barangaroo Point.

Cancer Council NSW is hoping to raise 70,000 dollars from the event. The money will go towards vital research, prevention, and information and support.
