City responds to playground concerns

Pyrmont resident groups are concerned about child safety in the playground at the old Water Police site, as reported in last week’s City News. The City of Sydney responds:

‘The City’s plans for the playground at the new Water Police park include the provision of both shade and fencing around the children’s playground, consistent with the City’s Water Police Site Master Plan adopted in 2006, following an award-winning consultation process involving the entire community. The community had further opportunities to comment on plans for the playground when the Development Application for the site was publicly exhibited.

‘Under the approved plans, a 27m x 3.6m shade structure will cover parts of the water play area and parts of the 1500m2 playground, and 40 mature trees will be planted around the playground to provide more shade. Parents and carers are advised to ensure children have adequate sun protection at all times when using any of the City parks or outdoor areas regardless of the presence of shade structures.

‘The playground also features a 500mm concrete wall and shrub plantings surrounding the entire playground with three entry points. The wall provides a sufficient buffer between the playground and other areas of the park but parents and carers using any of the City’s parks are advised to supervise their children at all times.

‘Sandstone from the original Pyrmont Bridge has been incorporated into elements of the playground including the sand pit and a sandstone fort complete with slippery dip.

‘Council will monitor use of the Water Police playground and park once it has opened and review arrangements as required.’
