Candidate profile: Georgina Anderson

Georgina Anderson studied economics before landing a job at BHP. She then moved to New York to study acting.

Theatre fans may remember her from She Males from Outer Space or from various commercials.

Ms Anderson says an understanding of theatrics is a useful skill for an aspiring politician.

“Of course it helps you,” she says. “I think it is all about communicating and that is the whole aim of politics.”

For a change of pace, Ms Anderson ran for the seat of Sydney in the 2007 Federal Election.

Ms Anderson came second after the ALP’s Tanya Plibersek.

“We were happy with that, I have no regrets,” she says.

While she didn’t gain office, the election was fruitful in other ways. She recently married her former campaign manager and current running mate, Edward Mandla.

Ms Anderson sees her bid for Town Hall as a chance to engage people on the issues that matter.

“Sometimes people are unsure about international politics but, damn it, they have a very strong opinion on when their garbage should be collected.”

Georgina Anderson also says her acting past would not be forgotten if she is elected next month.

“I would like to revive the movie industry in Sydney,” she says.

“Council can do a great deal to buck the current trend, there is so much red tape with filming now.”

The number four on the Liberal ticket believes the City of Sydney council has a dual role.

“You need to do the right thing by the residents but you need to bear in mind Sydney is an international landmark.

“We have got some great ideas about that, which we will release this week.”
