Callan Park Waterfront Upgrade Plan Released for Community Feedback
Public consultation has opened on a draft master plan for the foreshore at Callan Park, with proposed upgrades including expanded public access, new recreational infrastructure and opportunities for limited commercial activity along the waterfront.
Released by NSW government agency Greater Sydney Parklands, the draft Callan Park Foreshore Master Plan outlines proposed changes across the waterfront precinct, including Callan Point, Waterfront Green and sporting grounds leased to Inner West Council.
The plan proposes upgrades to the Bay Run, additional tree planting, seating, bushland improvements and new pathways, alongside the possible introduction of low-scale commercial activity such as a café or kiosk near the foreshore.
Greater Sydney Parklands chief executive Joshua French said the waterfront was one of the park’s busiest areas.
“The Callan Park waterfront is the most popular and heavily used part of the park, with more than 5,000 visitors using the Bay Run each day,” he said.
“This master plan sets out a coordinated, long-term approach to planning and investment, ensuring improvements are delivered safely, respectfully and in a way that protects heritage while meeting the needs of the community now and into the future.”
The draft plan also proposes removing public car access and parking along parts of the foreshore to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, with stage one works expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
French said the plan recognised the significance of Aboriginal heritage at Callan Point.
“Callan Point is the most culturally significant Aboriginal site within Callan Park, and the master plan recognises the importance of protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage while continuing to provide inclusive public access to this special place,” he said.
The foreshore consultation follows the recent release of the Callan Park Plan of Management 2026–2036, which outlines a broader 10-year strategy for the 61-hectare site.
Separately, the NSW Government has announced work is underway to convert the former Repatriation Ward building into a clubhouse for Balmain & District Football Club, supported by $1.8 million in state funding and $1.2 million from Inner West Council.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne also confirmed this month that the NSW Heritage Council had approved plans for two new all-weather sporting fields at Callan Park, with a final planning decision expected in June.
Community feedback on the draft foreshore master plan closes on 21 June.
