Building summer bodies

As spring morphs into summer, health and fitness will become increasingly important for many Sydneysiders. But there are some obvious traps to avoid if you’re looking to join a gym.
“We would like to see physical activity more a part of a balanced lifestyle than a means to a short term end,” said manager of Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic and Fitness Centre Brendan Owens.
“But the spring rush is a reality and we like people to be fully informed when considering joining a gym,” he added.
The YMCA-run centre offers members a ‘Good Gym Guide’ before joining.
Their  five membership tips include:
* Be wary of long-term contracts and the fees and charges associated with exiting a contract
* Make sure that an orientation, health consultation and gym program are included; many centres charge extra for this service
* Check what level of service and support is available once you become a member; are the staff helpful and friendly and are their instructors on the gym floor to offer assistance’
* Check to see that the facilities and equipment are available when you want to visit.
* Get a feel for the ‘vibe’ of the centre; would you feel comfortable there’ Are there people like you there’
“Feeling at ease in the centre during the initial few weeks and feeling like you are achieving realistic results in the first month is crucial to sticking with a program,” Mr Owens said.
‘    During November Cook and Phillip Park Aquatic and Fitness Centre is offering all new members ‘the first 30 Days for only $30’. To find out more, visit www.cookandphillip.org.au
