Bright alternative to fluorescent streetlights

Bright alternative to fluorescent streetlights

By Emma Cleary

The City of Sydney Council is investigating the possibility of replacing existing fluorescent streetlights around the city with eco-friendly LED lighting.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP responded to a request from Councillor Marcelle Hoff to consider the feasibility of such a project. Cr Hoff was enthusiastic about the positive impact it could have on the immediate environment.
?If every streetlight in Australia converted to LED, the entire country would meet its Kyoto obligations in one step,? she said.
Compared to neon or fluorescent lighting, LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights have a longer lifespan and run on much lower voltage. Consuming less power means they do not have to be replaced as often as fluorescent lights, and are free from the potentially dangerous Mercury found in other lighting alternatives.
Despite support from Councillors on the need to cut greenhouse gases, Cr Moore was concerned about the high cost involved in purchasing and installing the new lights.
The City?s CEO, Monica Barone, suggested meeting with representatives from other
capital city?s to discuss the potential of an intercity project involving LED lighting.
