BRIDESMAIDS

BRIDESMAIDS

According to some people, women aren’t funny. According to me, these people are idiots. Of course comedy is subjective, and what tickles one person may make another want to self-harm. But to claim an entire gender is lacking in the funnies is as ridiculous as arguments come. Mae West was funny. Lucille Ball was funny. Gilda Radner, Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Cho, Sarah Silverman – all freaking hilarious! And Tina Fey is a comedic god. And now there’s Bridesmaids. Co-written by and starring Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids also stars Wiig’s fellow SNL alum Maya Rudolph (a long time funny fave of yours truly), and “our” Rose Byrne who is so brilliant she almost steals the film. But despite a mostly female cast (with penis supplied by the delicious Jon Hamm and my future husband Chris O’Dowd) and a title that would make most men run for the hills, Bridesmaids is NOT a chick flick. This is a side-splitting, stomach-hurting, at times incredibly poignant (I even shed a little tear) film for ANYONE with a sense of humour and a high tolerance of vomit jokes. (NC) ****
