Branson visits Redfern Community Centre

Billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson made a surprise appearance at the Redfern Community Centre last Friday.

The Virgin Group founder was on hand as six Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students performed their own songs as part of On Track, a youth music development program.

On Track is sponsored by the City of Sydney, Virgin Mobile and Virgin Unite and provides disadvantaged and homeless young people in the Redfern area with real pathways into the music industry.

“I’m inspired and awed by the talent of the young people in the On Track program at the Redfern Community Centre,” said Sir Richard, whose visit marked the launch of the second instalment of the program, Second Track.

“What fun it’s been kicking off the 2011 Virgin Unite On Track program.”

The program gives young indigenous people exposure to a professional recording studio environment. The participants take part in a series of ‘Hands On’ sessions including song writing, production, performance and recording.

They gain further insights through the theory-based ‘Hands Up’ sessions which cover the professional workings of the music industry such as copyright, stage management, marketing and song development.

On Track is a fantastic program for young people in this area, and it was a treat to have Sir Richard Branson visit us yesterday to see these young musicians in action,” said Redfern Community Centre manager Scott Elphinstone.

“So far, 30 local kids have completed the 20-week course, and we’re delighted to be working with Virgin Unite again in 2011 to offer such important creative opportunities to the Redfern community.”

Friday was not the first time On Track participants have received inspiring visitors.

Sir Richard’s surprise visit yesterday follows special appearances in 2009 from Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, fashion designer Donna Karan, and world famous art and fashion photographer Russell James. Other visitors to the Centre have included HRH Prince William, actor Russell Crowe and UK performer Lady Sovereign.

In past, the students have also been given an opportunity to see first-hand how music events are put together and the diversity of careers available in the industry during VIP visits to the 2009 V Festival and a Black Eyed Peas concert.
