ON THE RUN: ‘Chappo’ runs the City to Surf for the WSPA

Bondi Rescue lifeguard, Chris “Chappo” Chapman, will be running the City2Surf this Sunday to help protect animals around the world.

Chris will run with four other friends in the hopes of raising a thousand dollars for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

“A world without animals, to me, would not be a nice world to live in,” said Chris.

The Bondi lifeguard is a self- confessed animal lover and has two dogs of his own, Max and Marley.

He said they’re an “extended part of the family”.

He and his friends have already raised over $400 but their end goal is $1000.

Chris is urging locals and animal lovers to support WSPA by donating online or even visiting him at the Bondi Lifeguard Tower to donate in person.

“You should support our team because we will be running like maniacs, so the more you donate the faster we will run for the animals!”

WSPA Fundraising Coordinator, Anne Keyvar, said: “It’s fantastic to have Chris run for us as his profile also helps raise awareness of the work we do.

“All funds raised go towards helping us reach our vision of a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty has ended,” she said.

Ms Keyvar said WSPA aims to achieve a range of things from “preventing cruelty to dogs and ending bear baiting, to helping animals affected by disasters and stopping inhumane farming practices.”

Bondi veterinarian and animal welfare advocate Pamela Tinslay praised Chris for his commitment to helping animals.

“It’s excellent what he’s doing,” she said.

“People say there’s bushfires, there’s tsunamis, earthquakes; why should we bother with animals?”

But Dr Tinslay believes animals deserve protection and quotes Ghandi in response.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
