Black stars don the gloves again

Boxing returns to Redfern on Sunday October 24 with Night of the Black Stars 3, an action-packed multicultural card featuring the cream of Sydney Inner City professional and amateur boxers.

The card is headlined by Wiradjuri Warrior Nathan Carroll, the former captain of the Australian Indigenous Amateur Boxing team. Carroll was an elite basketballer in New Zealand but eventually chose boxing and has thrived since graduating from the Australian Institute of Sport boxing program, including winning two silver medals middleweight at the Australian national titles. He grew up in Woolloomooloo and will fight the durable Romano Sanna at middleweight.

Other contestants include favourite light middleweight Taiwanese Australian Yao Yi Ma who takes on power-punching Victorian Benny “Rocky” Horra. Yi Ma is Anthony Mundine’s chief sparring partner. Mundine will be there watching, too.

Making his debut on the undercard is Woolloomooloo PCYC’s Amambir Singh who takes on tough Queenslander Grant Kraaymaat in a battle of the big men at light heavyweight.

The amateur component of the card is headlined by popular Glebe Light heavyweight Aboriginal Raylex Wymarra putting his skills on display with Heavyweight Torres Strait Islander Rocci Gabey.  Other Koori boxers on the card include middleweights Matt Smith and Dillon Johnson, Lightweight Shannon Jackson and Light Heavyweight Nathan Nichols.  Also fighting representing Mundine’s Gym in Redfern are Tongan heavyweight Molitika Siu and middleweight Paul Evans.

Indigenous Boxing Academy Ambassadors Middleweight legend Tony Mundine and first ever Kangaroos Rugby League Aboriginal captain Arthur Beetson will both be there.

“The Indigenous Boxing Academy is keeping a proud tradition alive and giving Aboriginal youth focus, self esteem and respect for our people,” said Tony Mundine. “Night of the Black stars is a great night out and brings the mob together.”
