A vivid strawberry explosion against a buttery pastry shell makes for an excellent Strawberry Crumble Tart ($4.50). Texturally perfect Rose and Lilac Macaroons ($3.50) straddle the delicate line between crunch and chew. The sweet, creamy richness of the Custard Tart ($5) flanked by flimsy, flaky pastry, is second to none. Well-made Little Marionette Coffee ($3) comes quickly, from affable staff. On the savoury side, Zucchini and Pumpkin Muffins ($3.50) are moist and tasty; a Ham and Cheese Croissant with Tomato Relish ($5.50) is layered with Heidi Gruyere, stellar ham and buttery pastry that shatters. On a previous visit, the Lamb Shank Pie ($6.50) proved to be real contender for Sydney’s tastiest pie; while a cup of White Nectarine Jelly on Panna cotta ($5) was a restaurant quality dessert at a fraction of the price. There’s some real quality baking going on down here; they have my vote for Sydney’s best pastry shop. The man behind the pans is Christopher The. His impressive resume includes Claude’s, Quay and stand-out bakeries Victorie and Sonoma. The tiny space has a quirky collection of rustic furnishings; or spill out onto the quiet street to eat at an eye-catching Philippe Starck table held up by a gnome.
