Bargains on hand at SecondHand Saturday

One man’s trash is another’s treasure – this age-old saying is the philosophy behind SecondHand Saturday in Ultimo this week. The ninth edition of the annual community-wide garage sale will once again turn Quarry Green into what organisers describe as a “treasure hunter’s paradise”.

The idea behind SecondHand Saturday is to strongly encourage reuse and recycling, and prevent items with life still in them ending up in landfill. Over 50 participating households from Ultimo and Pyrmont will put old clothing, household items and nick-nacks up for grabs. If the households want to leave anything behind at the end of the day, scavengers have until Sunday morning to pick up what’s left.

Organiser Lorraine Findlay said the program had originally been instituted by Leichhardt Council, which saw a huge reduction in the waste collected on their council collection days. “It cut their landfill down by a massive amount – up to 75 per cent,” she said.

Representatives from local groups such as Pyrmont Ultimo Landcare, who help reclaim waste land for native vegetation, will be on hand to assist local residents minimise their impact on the environment, as will a team from the City of Sydney.

SecondHand Saturday is on this weekend, September 19, between 9am and 1pm at Quarry Green in Ultimo (located between Bulwara Road and Jones Street).
