AND IF WE ALL LIVED TOGETHER

Five ageing friends decide to move in together as an alternative to living in a retirement home. They are joined by young ethnology student, Dirk (Daniel Bruhl), who observes and records their interactions for his thesis on the ageing population. The realities of ‘getting old’ lead the five to face their pasts and come to terms with the future. It is an exploration of life, love and sex, and what these things mean with age.   At its core this is a light hearted comedy not to be taken too seriously. The characters are somewhat stereotyped and it is a very sentimental film. But writer and director Stéphane Robelin is able to balance these comedic and sentimental elements with a genuinely witty treatment of a bleak and very real destiny we all face. ***
