ANABELLE KAY – ANABELLE KAY

There are two striking things about Anabelle Kay’s self-titled EP. 1) Her sweet, warbling voice sounds so wise it’s surprising to discover the singer/songwriter from the Central Coast is only 20 years old. 2) There are flashes of retro moments on this album, it’s as though you’ve stumbled into a black and white film. Young, modern singers with an old-school vibe seem to be popping up around the Australian music industry. If listeners are getting their roots/blues fix from emerging artist, Lanie Lane, then they can get their country/folk fix from Anabelle Kay. Banjo guitars, warbling, and lyrics of sunflower skies and suede boots bring country elements to the album, although in the end it feels more folk than country. Her sound is unique and hard to compare, but when the piano plays there’s something of the Regina Spektor to her, an influence of Anabelle’s. This is a CD about carefree day dreaming, nostalgia and having fun. It’s a perfect album to listen to on a lazy Saturday while pottering around the house with a cup of tea.
