A man has been charged after allegedly setting fire to a stolen vehicle in Sydney’s Inner City suburb of Dulwich Hill before departing the scene on foot carrying a firearm.

The 32-year-old man with “shaggy hair” was arrested at around 11:30pm on Sunday night in Burwood after evading Police for three days. The man, who had last been seen on Union Street, was treated for minor injuries sustained during the arrest before being escorted to Newtown Police Station.

The injuries came after the man allegedly “attempted to evade police” and were quickly treated at the scene by a NSW Ambulance team.

Arrest Follows Alleged Ignition Of A Stolen Vehicle In Residential Dulwich Hill Carpark

It comes after officers were called to the basement carpark of a residential building on Williams Parade at about 10.20am on Friday 16 October following reports of a stolen vehicle.

Officers were told a man had been inside the vehicle with a firearm before allegedly setting it alight and leaving on foot.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, with no injuries reported.

Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald, from Inner West Police Area Command, said a group of people had reported being threatened by a man carrying a shotgun as they attempted to leave.

The subsequent police search for the man prompted road closures, instructions for residents to remain indoors, and disruptions to light rail services through Sydney’s Inner West.

Specialist police, PolAir and the Dog Squad have been involved in the search. Armed police were urging residents to stay indoors, and others to immediately leave the area. Nearby schools reportedly introduced lockdown procedures.

The man has been charged with acquiring a prohibited firearm, possession of a shortened firearm, acquiring a prohibited firearm, armed robbery, vehicle theft, driving a car while disqualified, possession of a housebreaking implement, and destroying property.

The man has been refused bail and is due to appear in court on Monday.
