Nusra Latif Quereshi: Birds in Far Pavilions

Pakistan-born, Melbourne based artist Nusra Latif Quereshi makes her first solo exhibition debut at the NSW Art Gallery, celebrating 30 years of her artistry with her newly commissioned installation Nusra Latif Quereshi: Birds in Far Pavilions.

Best known for her miniature contemporary paintings, she magically fuses historical archives in a contemporary light, reflecting on Quereshi’s 30-year long career that was recognised when she received the Bulgari Art Award in 2019.

Unveiling her journey of moving to Australia in 2001, she addresses the intricate history of Pakistan through her art, and reveals the consequences of colonialism.

As an expression of freedom from the trauma and loss she experienced during this time, her artistry showcases the fusion between historical and contemporary art.

Magritte – René Margritte

Australia’s first retrospective of the world renowned Belgian surrealist René Margritte will be exhibiting more than 100 works of his finest works. Magritte at the Art Gallery of NSW, well known for deadpan, realist style. 

Within the exhibition, pieces from his first avant-garde explorations and commercial works in the 1920’s, to impressive surrealism art through the course of his artistry up until his final years reveal the profound influence he has on contemporary art.

Created in cooperation with the Magritte Foundation, Brussels, this exhibition is one to mark on your calendars!

Primavera 2024: Young Australian Artists

The MCA’s annual exhibitions of outstanding work created by Australian artists aged 35 years and under, brings their creative touch to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.

Curator Lucy Latella joins five artists who unveil the possibilities of cultural connection in the face of social, political and geographical challenges through their work. In its 33rd year, Lucy Latella draws upon the significance of this exhibition. 

“The artists in Primavera 2024 draw on a range of media to connect with their culture, community and family, as their diverse works highlight that culture isn’t simply inherited, but formed in the present” said Lucy.

Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory

Exclusive to Sydney, New York-based artist Julie Mehretu brings to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia her recent works of monumental and medium format paintings, including works on paper from mid 1990’s to now.

Drawing on the influence of historical art and architecture, Julie also draws upon current issues such asd revolution, migration, global capitalism and climate change in her work.

Her exhibition is accompanied by a major publication and authors including the exhibitions curators Suzanne Cotter, MCA Director and Jane Devery, Senior Curator, Exhibitions.
