ALEXANDER THE GREAT

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

Catherine the Great of Russia was a fan of Alexander the Great of Macedonia and was a collector of artefacts related to his time. Now some 300 years later Sydneysiders can see the highlights of Catherine’s collection courtesy of the Hermitage Museum of St Petersburg.

The exhibition showcases several aspects of Alexander’s life, character and influence. The rusted and pitted pieces of armour bear witness to his military conquests, the exquisitely wrought golden jewellery suggests the wealth and sophistication of his time and the beautifully coloured tapestry and classical paintings illustrate how his influence and legend persisted.

From the delicately hewn pottery statues of women, actors and everyday scenes to the imposing images of the gods created from large marble blocks, the exhibit evokes the majesty and frailty of the human condition and tells a story of a man, a myth and a legacy.

Until Apr 28, 2013, Australian Museum, 6 College St, Sydney, $12-24, 136 100, australianmuseum.net.au
