A new stage in Sydney’s leading theatre for emerging artists

When Nick Marchand steps down as Griffin Theatre’s Artistic Director, the company’s SBW Stables Theatre in Kings Cross will literally be left in tatters.

His departure coincides with the theatre’s 10-week closure from early June for the initial stage of a three-year renovation plan.

After three and-a-half years, four seasons and 37 new works, Marchand said leaving was a difficult decision, but believes it is time for change.

“[I] have always believed that for an organisation to remain fresh and innovative – especially one such as Griffin that thrives on new energy – there needs to be a regular renewal in terms of artistic direction,” he said.

Upon reopening, the theatre hopes to have found a new Artistic Director, with Marchand co-curating in a transitory position before taking on a role outside the company, about which he remains tight-lipped.

During his time with the theatre, Marchand has nurtured a new generation of Australian writers and directors, while developing residency programs for playwrights and affiliate directors.

He also oversaw programs offering free performances for students and the wider community.

The Griffin Independent program helped initiate nine emerging female directors, many who now work at companies such as Red Stitch, Company B Belvoir and Sydney Theatre Company.

The theatre’s latest success has been the fundraising of nearly $750,000 for its renovations appeal to ‘help give Australian playwrights a new home’.

Donors included Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton, Bob Carr and John Bell (of Bell Shakespeare), with significant donations from Arts NSW and Stables owner the SBW Foundation.

The Stables will soon have a new bar and box office, refitted bathrooms and a refinished concrete foyer floor.

Later renovations will see more comfortable seating, restoration of the brick walls and upgrades to the lighting/sound operations and dressing rooms.

Next-door’s terrace headquarters will also receive a refit and exterior restoration.

The theatre’s website says, “We are making it a priority to retain the much loved aesthetic of the theatre by integrating original finishes with a more practical design solutions for our working spaces.”

Griffin is still seeking donations for its renovation appeal, in order to reach its million-dollar target.
