Best GLBTIQ Club
THE POLLY’S CLUB
For a city that’s supposed to be one of the world’s great gay capitals, Sydney’s GLBTIQ scene is pretty lacklustre. It’s typified by stereotypical drag shows, naff music, bar staff wearing Aberzombie… sorry, Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirts, and every tiresome stereotype under the sun. But amidst the dross is a jewel called The Polly’s Club. Not a full-time venue as such, but a true club, Polly’s hosts bi-monthly Saturday night dances. Each Polly’s event attracts a killer combination of fruity old queens, fierce dykes, kooky club kids, suburban gays, terrific trannies, dowager drag queens and curious straights. Best of all, the music is fun and fabulous at this popular antidote to the Oxford St. clone zone. (Peter Hackney)
