LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide June 28th

This Thursday June 28th local indie four piece, Sures, will be playing at Good God Small Club to promote their EP Poseidon. The promising young group have fashioned an ethereal pop sound based on surf-pop, pretty doo-whop vocal harmonies and fuzzed out guitars. If the Beach Boys were starting out now they’d probably sound pretty close to this.

On Friday June 29th Taasha Coates and Tristan Gooall, the singer and guitarist respectively of absorbing and emotive Adelaide country/blues act, The Audreys, will be playing at The Vanguard in honour of the recently released package Collected, which contains the band’s three ARIA winning albums along with rare demos, b-sides, live recordings and videos. Although the group won’t be in its full five-piece configuration, the heart of soul of the music will be on show for all to see at this intimate event. Over at the Factory Theatre there will be a bit of an Aussie power-pop throwback when Nick Barker and The Reptiles reunite to play a set of classic hits, in particular the one that everyone remembers Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me). Definitely head over to this one for a singalong and some pub rock nostalgia.

On Saturday June 30th you can catch talented Aussie instrumentalist Jonathan Boulet who will be performing his unique brand of electronic/folk/pop at the Metro Theatre. He’s celebrating the release of his new album, the longwindedly-titled We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart, and for an example of how excellent an evening it’ll be, check out the single This Song is Called Ragged which is characterised by upbeat drumming, bubbling marimba accompaniment and Boulet’s beautiful voice. Supports on the night are Wolf & Cub and Joseph Liddy & The Skeleton Horse.

On Sunday July 1st the Annandale Hotel is playing host to a Rice is Nice label showcase featuring an array of awesome Sydney talent. The day will see The Laurels, SPOD, Donny Bennet, Richard In Your Mind, Shady Lane and Seekae DJs take the stage alongside a mystery new signing that will be unveiled for the first time. Most of these acts have just released new albums so there will be plenty of excitement in the air at this event.

Lastly, on Wednesday July 4th TIm Freedman, pianist and lead singer of Newtown misfits The Whitlams, is embarking on a national solo tour and he’ll be playing the Sydney show at the Basement. After spending years at the helm of the quirky act he released his first solo album Australian Idle last year to warm reception and the corresponding tour with backing band The Idle was much lauded. Freedman will be performing on his own this time around, although, he’s still one of the most relaxed and natural stage performers around.
