Redfern Station’s festive work is leaving, with Transport for NSW sharing the plan to remove a Christmas banner that commuters have labeled online as obvious “AI slop.”

The holiday-inspired artwork, stretched between platforms 10 and 11, showcases Santa relaxing on the beach in a lounge chair, surrounded by native Australian animals. Passersby have looked closer, spotting different takes on creatures such as a koala’s head on a kangaroo’s body, a rodent with detached limbs, and two bikini-wearing kangaroos.

Redditors slam the AI suspected Christmas banner

A photo of the mural was posted to a Reddit forum focused on Sydney, and the image went viral, sparking disapproval. More than 3,000 people liked a post, which branded the banner as AI slop, with comments critiquing the mutant animal traits it reflected.

On Thursday, 27 November, Transport for NSW decided against the Christmas-themed work due to the community’s reaction.

“Sydney Trains’ Redfern Station staff have displayed artwork for several years to help create a positive end-of-year atmosphere for our customers,” said a spokesperson for Transport NSW. “We received feedback about this year’s display and, in response, have decided to remove the artwork.”

NSW Transport was questioned whether its Christmas display was AI-generated by its own staff, as the image is unavailable for online sale.

AI mural in London

Redfern’s banner isn’t the only Christmas artwork with accusations of suspected AI use. In London, a large riverside mural in Kingston-upon-Thames was also taken down after locals complained about its distorted details.

Additionally, the owner of the wall on which the mural is situated told London Centric that it was “inspired by the 16th-century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder.”

The mural consisted of snowmen with extra eyes and dogs with chicken-like bodies. These AI-infused artworks have contributed to a growing community stance against the production of low-quality AI-generated art.

Redfern Station plans to continue showcasing other holiday decorations, including lights and a Christmas tree, at the Lawson Street Opal gates. Those decorations were installed on 8 November and match similar festive setups at other major Sydney Trains stations, allowing commuters to enjoy and get into the Christmas spirit.
