SYDNEY MARDI GRAS PARADE
Like most years, our most spectacular street parade of 2012 was the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade. The words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ are apparently now officially redundant from the title, but it’s still one of the world’s premier queer events, delivering its message of equality, inclusion and diversity in a confection of colour and noise. This year was especially colourful with the high priestess of pop, Kylie Minogue, taking centre stage. However the highlight for many was seeing Shelley Argent OAM, the national spokesperson for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), lead the parade; a loud and proud Mum and housewife whose message of acceptance and love cuts across Australia’s generations, demographics and ethnicities.
