EXHIBITION: EXPERIMENTA PLAYGROUND
BY AMELIA GROOM
Escape to Experimenta Playground, an exhibition where art works demand your interaction. Watch your own shadow grow scales, teeth, eyes and horns with UK artist Philip Worthington’s Shadow Monsters. Play with slippery sea creatures in a virtual underwater world with Immersion by Angela Barnett, Andrew Buchanan, Darren Ballingall, Chris MacKellar and Christian Rubino. Peer into a Magic Faraway Tree and glimpse a fairytale forest where a virtual bear pays homage to pioneer video artist Bruce Nauman, in What’s Yours is Mine by Jaki Middleton and David Lawrey.
‘Experimenta Playground draws together a collection of artworks that encourage playfulness, placing the audience in a central role in bringing the exhibition to life,’ said co-curator Liz Hughes. A digital media playground of interactive artworks, video installations, short films and extreme art on screen by over 30 Australian and international artists, the exhibition is touring nationally and opens at Sydney’s CarriageWorks this week.
Embracing the creative possibilities of new technology, Experimenta Playground features international artists including Hiraki Sawa, Guy Ben-Ner, June Bum Park, Eugenio Ampudia, PES, Roman Signer and many more, alongside Australian artists like Shaun Gladwell, Daniel Crooks, Narinda Reeders and Stelarc. All are welcome to the opening night party on Wednesday the 7 May at 6pm, and on Saturday the 10th of May from 2-3pm there will be free curator and artist floortalks.
