The highly anticipated Italian Film Festival finally returns to cinemas in Sydney after being shutdown alongside all the arts owing to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Italian film industry has produced quality cinema over the years evident from the fact that Italy has won the most Oscars in the foreign film category. The festival holds the title in Australia as being the biggest and most popular Italian film festival outside of Italy, so festival enthusiasts can expect a program of enticing comedies, dramas, classics, and a selection of retrospective features.

The ‘Italian Goddesses’ who graced our cinemas over the years make a return to the big screen and moviegoers have the opportunity to revisit their cinematic gems. Claudia Cardinale stars in a 4K restoration print of The Leopard, an epic not to be missed. Comedy Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell stars Gina Lollobrigida, Italy’s darling of cinema and Sophia Loren delivers a memorable performance in Marriage Italian Style directed by Vittorio De Sica. Anna Magnani stars in the closing night presentation of 1945’s war drama Rome, Open City.

There are fourteen titles to choose from in the New Italian Cinema program, a majority of which are Australian premieres. When Mum Is Away…With The Family is the sequel to 2019’s highly successful 10 Days Without Mamma and should prove popular with families. For sports enthusiasts Tigers is a drama that explores the ‘other side’ of professional football in Italy, and Paolo Conte – Via Con Me is an insightful documentary into the life of an extraordinary singer and composer whose career has spanned 50 years.

Until Nov 21. Palace Norton St, Palace Verona, Palace Central, Chauvel Cinema. $19.50-$23.50+b.f. Tickets & Info: www.italianfilmfestival.com.au
