The $526.8 million major redevelopment of Ryde Hospital has officially begun construction.
The latest investment by the NSW government is aiming to transform the delivery of healthcare for the Ryde local community, bringing advanced care closer to home.
This major redevelopment will enhance the hospital with an upgraded emergency department and intensive care unit, additional theatres, and a newly designed ambulatory care centre.
On Monday morning, Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Health Ryan Park joined local health workers for a traditional sod-turn event to mark the beginning of the redevelopment project.
Hospital Transformation
Ryde Hospital’s transformation will also introduce a dedicated paediatric short-stay unit, increase adult overnight inpatient beds, and expand medical imaging services.
The project will optimise the existing facilities at the Ryde campus, including the Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre and the historic Denistone House.
Premier Chris Minns described the redevelopment as a “milestone” in the effort to “build a world-class hospital for the Ryde community.”
“This project will boost capacity at the hospital and give people in the Ryde area the best possible care”, Premier Minns said.
“We are expanding this essential service to meet the needs of the Ryde community for years to come”, he added.
Temporary Relocation Of Services
Last month, the NSW government issued an update on the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment project.
The introduction of construction staging and temporary building works in July involved the relocation of some existing buildings and services to facilitate the construction of the new hospital.
The temporary facilities planned for July included:
- A new temporary ICU/CCU inpatient unit
- Modifications to the Graythwaite building, including the addition of a temporary kitchen, linen storage, and connections to Trigg House
- Relocated loading dock, engineering, and waste management facilities
- Installation of in-ground services and utilities
- Temporary site offices
The facilities are expected to remain operational until late 2027 while the redevelopment process is underway.
Minister for Health Ryan Park said that the redevelopment would be a crucial step toward building a healthier future for the Ryde community.
“This more than half a billion-dollar investment will deliver the healthcare that the growing community of Ryde needs now, and into the future”, Minister Park said.
“The hospital redevelopment will transform the health facilities for Ryde and surrounding suburbs, ensuring people can get the care they need close to home and providing staff with a modern place to work”, he added.
The Ryde area is expected to be home to more than 180,000 people by 2041.
