The pressure is on. Twelve cabaret stars from across Australia will battle it out at this year’s Cabaret Showcase Grand Final. Up for grabs is the opportunity to perform a solo show at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMTF) with flights, accommodation and $1000 cash prize included. The fellow responsible for making dreams come true is NIDA trained Jeremy Youett, general manager of NYMTF.

Why is a program like this important? Aside from winning, each year there are many competition entrants who get picked up by agents and booked to do other gigs … or they go on to further develop and perform their own solo shows.

What can audiences expect from the show? A diverse selection of ideas and talent. The Showcase exposes audiences to a variety of performers and their own original concepts each night, so there is something to suit every taste.

What are some of the differences between the Sydney cabaret scene and New York? The industry in New York is obviously much larger in volume, so it generates a prolific array of work which is much more widely supported. Having said that, for its size, Sydney has a pretty constant and reliable stream of cabaret artists who continue to produce quality content. At the end of the day, cabaret comes in so many forms and styles; it doesn’t matter what city you’re in. If cabaret is good, it has the power to move and engage you – which is what it should be about!
