$100K reward to identify father’s killers

Police are offering $100,000 for information regarding an assault that led to the death of a man in central Sydney last year.
54-year-old Brian Gilsenan died in hospital in May last year after being bashed by two unidentified young males in Bathurst Street four months earlier.
After several months of investigation, police are now distributing flyers of CCTV footage of the attack, urging members of the public to identify three people that may be connected to the event.
“We urge the public to consider assisting the police in this matter and certainly the images in that footage are clear enough for people to recognise these individuals,” said Detective Sergeant Stuart Gair of Sydney Central Local Area Command.
“We hope that the $100,000 ways heavily and motivates people to come forward and give assistance.”
The attack caused Mr Gilsenan major head trauma, who was sent to St Vincent’s Hospital.
The Middle Cove IT worker and divorced father of two reportedly made a slow recovery over several months. However, his condition deteriorated after contracting pneumonia.
Police called for people to come forward with information immediately following the attack, which happened just after midnight on February 8, 2008.
“This is a cowardly and vicious attack which was unprovoked.
“We are hoping that anyone who was out in Bathurst Street this morning who saw these men will come forward and talk to us,” said a police spokesperson after the incident.
The footage shows two young men and one woman, all believed to be between 17 and 21-years-old.
The two men are described as being in their late teens and Caucasian in appearance.
One of the men was last seen wearing a white singlet, grey jeans and white shoes and was carrying a black backpack.
The second male was wearing a grey T-shirt, black tracksuit pants and white shoes. The woman was wearing office attire and police say she might live or work in Surry Hills, or in the inner city.
Footage after the attack shows the two young men walking up Bathurst Street and then splitting up.
After several months of chasing various leads and potential suspects, Detective Sergeant Gair said police were trying more innovative tactics.
“We are basically back to square one,” he said.
“So we decided to try a reward and another distribution of flyers in the hope that it generates more suspects before the matter goes to the coroner.”
Gair said several people had called in with information which is being follow up.
$100,000 is the maximum reward offered for information regarding homicide.
Anyone with information that might assist police with their inquiries is urged to contact City Central Police Station on (02) 9265 6499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
