World surfing champion to visit Bondi

Seven times world surfing champion Layne Beachley will make a special visit to Bondi Beach on Sunday, March 8.

Beachley, who recently retired from the sport and lives on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, will be the guest of a fund-raising event for Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club (SBLSC).

She will join club nipper members in water activities from 9 am, be presented with an honorary membership of the club and then be available in front of the clubhouse until midday to sign autographed copies of her recently released first authorised biography, Layne Beachley: Beneath the Waves.

The book is about the skinny little girl nicknamed ‘Gidget’, who overcame obstacles ‘ from chronic fatigue and depression to debilitating injury and family tragedy ‘ to become an icon in the male-dominated world of professional surfing.

Beachley also blazed trails in the mountainous waves of Hawaii’s outer reefs to earn respect where it mattered most ‘ in the water.

Copies of the book will be sold by the club for $35 each on the day, or they can be purchased in advance, then collected and signed by the surfing star on the day.

Cheques or money orders for the book can be posted to Layne Beachley Book Offer, Bondi SBLSC, PO Box 7007 Bondi Beach NSW 2026, or the book can be ordered on the club’s website, www.bondisurfclub.com
