Woman injured by bottle hurled through bus window

A 57-year-old woman was injured last Wednesday when a glass bottle thrown by youths shattered a bus window and hit the woman.

The woman and a 26-year-old man suffered head injuries. The woman had to be taken to hospital for treatment, while paramedics treated the man at the scene.

The bus was driving in Queens Park Road early Wednesday morning when someone hurled the beer bottle through a side window.

A spokesman for the State Transit Authority called for tougher sentences for the ‘thugs’ who throw objects at buses. “This clearly has to be stopped. People will get killed if this happens again.”

Police said they couldn’t identify the offenders. “A group of youths just walked past the bus before the incident happened. But CCTV footage did not capture the incident and unfortunately the driver didn’t get a clear view of them,” said Superintendent Phil Rogers.

Throwing objects at buses has been on ongoing problem in the Eastern Suburbs says Rogers.

“We will step up surveillance along the bus routes in the Eastern Suburbs to avoid this happening again. It is sickening and we will come down hard on anybody who has similar thoughts.”
