What’s new at Waverley Park?

BY CYNTHIA BARCLAY

The draft concept plans for the Waverley Pavilion have been developed and are now on exhibition for public comment. Waverley Council held a ‘Have a Say Day’ on February 1 to find out the community’s opinion about the project. Every resident had the chance to complete a feedback form to express their opinions.

The Waverley Park Pavilion concept includes both sporting facilities (club rooms, change rooms, and a multipurpose indoor sports court) and community facilities (community room, public toilets and a small café).

Waverley Mayor Sally Betts said the park and pavilion were both important community assets. ‘It won’t only be a sports facility; it will be used by a broad spectrum of our community,’ Councillor Betts said.

Parks Planning Manager Camille Kelly, who has been working on the project for the last 12 months, took time to explain to each resident how the council planned to upgrade and improve the area.

‘The community needs to be involved. We think closing the footprint around the playground will increase security,’ she said.

Ruth Johnston, the recreation planner, said it would probably take a year to get the project started but that so far community feedback had been positive.

Although council staff provided a detailed explanation at the meeting, there was still one uncomfortable question that was asked by almost every resident: ‘How are you going to combat the vandalism”

The question remains unanswered.

The plans will be on exhibition until Friday, February 6 at the Bondi Junction Customer
Service Centre and on the website www.waverley.nsw.gov.au
