While Bondi Beach lies at the centre of Christmas plans for many locals, enjoying the sun and sand is only part of the Waverley Christmas experience.

Whether it is free gift wrapping and face painting down at Oxford St or Carols in Coogee, the festive spirit remains alive and well in the east.

Waverley Mayor Sally Betts said there will be activities for everyone over the Christmas season.

“Everyone in the community can get involved,” she said. “Christmas carols, present wrapping at Bondi Junction Mall, the events down at the beach are available for everybody to participate … there’s a whole lot of stuff.”

On December 8, 15 and 16 from 1pm-2pm, a classic tale came to life in Waverley Library’s Theatrette with their The Little Match Girl. The charity event was based on Hans Christian Anderson’s much loved story.

On December 16 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, a Coogee Carols event was held at Goldstein Reserve near Coogee Beach. The free twilight Christmas concert featured local television and musical stars.

Busy shoppers can take a moment to relax and enjoy free gift-wrapping at Oxford St Mall between 17-21 December and on Monday, December 24.

In addition, there is face painting, Christmas elves and a reindeer roaming the mall to keep the kids busy.

On Christmas Eve from 8-10pm there will be ‘Church in the Marketplace’ carols around the Westfield Christmas tree presented by the Uniting Church. On Christmas Day seniors can enjoy a Christmas Lunch at the Waverley Community and Senior Centre. To book, call 9386 7900 or 9386 7901.

And to finish 2012 with a bang, spend New Years Eve at Dudley’s Reserve – a family NYE event with free jumping castles, face painting, DJs, music and dancing. Licensed bar and food stalls will also be available.

You can purchase tickets online at moshtix.com.au, by calling 1300 438 849 or by dropping into the Waverley Council Customer Service Centre at 55 Spring St, Bondi Junction.
