Waverley Shield at Bronte beach

The nippers take to the sand again as the annual prestigious Waverley Shield continues its proud tradition of life saving on Sunday November 16.

Now in its 20th year, the Shield has proved to be a very popular event for Waverley nippers aged 8 to14.

The event is hosted on a rotational basis between the Bronte, Bondi and North Bondi Surf Clubs at either Bronte or Bondi Beach. This year it will be held at the Bronte surf club, which since 1903 has made great strides in uniting the surf community with its many activities.

Surf club youth manager Craig Bartlett says the event focuses on participation, good sportsmanship and having fun as well as showcasing the best talent in the Waverley area.

It also teaches children valuable survival skills for the surf or pool, incorporating enjoyable exercises such as 50 metre beach sprints, flags, 1km surf swims, board paddles and wade events that give practicality to important life saving skills.

Make no mistake about it; this is where you will find the future iron men and women of Australia so head down to Bronte beach at 8am on November 16 to cheer them on.
