Waverley Park pavilion gets a spruce up

By Spiro Dimolianis
Waverley Council has commissioned McPhee Architects to draw up preliminary plans for the new Waverley Pavilion after extensive consultation with residents.

Design proposals for the upgrade and refurbishing of the pavilion will be available for community viewing later this year with construction likely to begin in 2009.

The historic pavilion, which has seen much community use since the foundation stone was laid in 1939, was closed last year on advice that it was unsafe. The rebuilding of the pavilion was identified as a priority.

Ongoing consultation has included an information day at Waverley Park last month, which attracted about 80 residents who agreed the sporting facility needed a spruce up. Further opportunities for residents and Waverley Park users to comment on the plans will be included in the development process.

Waverley Council Mayor Ingrid Strewe said the pavilion upgrade presented a great opportunity.
‘It’s really exciting because we have a clean slate and can develop a purpose-built facility for the many users of the popular oval and park,’ she said.

The new pavilion design aims to be functional and appealing for all park users. Care will be taken to preserve the heritage aspects of the park with ecologically sustainable design measures that reflect the area’s history and special character. The principal architect Wayne McPhee is also a heritage consultant and founding member of the NSW National Trust.

The aim is to create a multi-purpose building that will serve the community for years to come.

Consultations will continue and stakeholders will be kept informed throughout the planning and design process.
