Vale: Dr Clif Ryan

Dr Clifton “Clif” Ryan, the popular former president of Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, has passed away at the age of 83.

A former North Bondi club member, Dr Ryan joined Bondi in the 1970s through his association with the club’s joggers and early morning swimmers; served eight consecutive seasons as club president, from 1984-85 to 1991-92, and was later honoured with life membership of the club.

“Clif was the club’s senior vice-president and when I stood down as president, he took over and guided it through difficult times [financially and falling membership],” said Andrew Winters, who is serving a second period as Bondi club president.

“He was well respected in the community and despite being extremely busy as a medical practitioner he found time to devote to surf club administration.”

Dr Ryan’s funeral was held at St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church, Rose Bay, on December 3.

His family requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club to assist with funding its voluntary lifesaving activities.
