Unique radio service in Glebe

With the launch of digital radio this week The Independent took some time out with one of the areas more unique radio services, 2RPH.

2RPH is located in Glebe and is an organisation which provides, as its call sign suggests, Radio for the Print Handicapped.

The stations services are not just for the blind or vision impaired but for people who have literacy issues or physical disabilities which make it hard for them to hold a book or paper.

Station Manager Nicci Lindemann said that the service, while intended as a service for the print handicapped, was used by many who simply found the service an easy way to catch up on the latest news or listen to their favourite magazine over the radio.

“We found from a survey last year that just as many people who don’t have a disability, the rest of us, who are too busy to read a paper, can just listen, and it’s great,” she said.

2RPH is funded by a combination of Government funding, fundraising events, supporters, sponsorships and the most vital of roles volunteers.

Presenter of the Australian program and volunteer, Mike Phillips jokingly said that the station paid him what he was worth.

Mr Phillips said that going digital would give the station a lot more options in the future.
