If you haven’t been down to check out the new Darling Quarter, you probably should! After you’ve finished elbowing kids aside for a go on the adult-sized slide, and gotten your hands on Archimedes’ Screw, you can explore another sort of fluid dynamics at Jessie and Terence Chau’s latest venture. Sister Jennifer Chau is your effortlessly cool guide to the youthful Japanese cocktail list, ranging from imported Sakura liqueur based Cherry Blossom ($13.50) to a childhood dream: the Drunken Spider ($14.50) with a green tea ice cream float! Chef Miyamoto Yasunari will keep you in wacky fusion sushi or nicely presented Sashimi Tasting Plates (7 Kinds/$38.80) bested by scampi, surf clam and conger eel, until the Kobe cattle come home. However for me my favourite Dewazakura ($17.80/large bottle) sake drinking companions were his Crispy Soft Shell Crab Sandwiches ($9.80), Spicy Scallop Carpaccio ($10.80) and Mayo Prawn Tacos ($9.80). My dining companion gasped in paroxysms of pleasure over beautifully handled Wagyu Beef Tataki ($16.80); while I alternated spoonfuls of an excellent Chawan Mushi ($5.80) savoury egg custard with nicely caramelised Home-Made Pork Gyoza ($6.80). So much food and frivolity even inclined me to hang around for a Waffle with Green Tea Ice Cream ($10.80). I guess Darling Harbour finally is fun.
