Parking in Bondi may be a nightmare, but one food truck has taken it upon itself to park atop a pub. The Eat Art Truck now has a permanent home above the Beach Road Hotel – I believe it’s the first food truck to have its wheels clamped. You still order from a window and even though you’re inside, there’s an open-air roof, so it feels like you’re on the road. But that’s where the similarity stops. Ex-Tetsuya’s chef, Stuart Mcgill’s food is restaurant quality (served on the finest campsite crockery). It’s American-Japanese, so expect clogged arteries via chopsticks. Gaijin Sushi ($18/6) packs punch with kingfish, salmon and snapper on top of sticky and fried rice. While the Fried Chicken with Watermelon ($18) is a three-way of fried chicken skin, southern style and Karaji style – basically death by chicken. The watermelon is a mockery. Standout dish is the Grilled Prawns, Coddled Egg, Corn Bread ($22). It’s a dish you’d want as hangover comfort food, so ordering it this evening with a Beach Road Mule ($12) seems a bit like putting up Christmas decorations in March. Nonetheless the sweet corn bread mopping up egg yolk and wisps of pork floss is decadently divine. My advice overall? Park yourself here with a hangover.
