Inner West Council’s Trans and Gender Diverse Swim is returning on Sunday 28th August, with the council once again inviting the trans and gender diverse community and allies to join in.

The exclusive event will be held at the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre (AKAC) this time, after the success at the Ashfield Aquatic Centre in April. With 350 registrations and the positive feedback from the previous event, Inner West Council’s Deputy Mayor Jessica D’Arienzo is looking forward to the upcoming swim.

“Our Council embraces our diversity, it is what gives us our edge and makes us unique, and we want to celebrate who we are. Our upcoming swim afternoon is one way to celebrate our trans and gender diverse community,” D’Arienzo said.

“What a great way for our trans and gender diverse community, their friends, partners and family to connect, play and enjoy everything our fabulous aquatic centres offer in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.”

Besides being held at a different aquatic centre, the second Trans and Gender Diverse swim will be held during the day. From 2 pm to 6 pm, the AKAC facilities will be closed to the general public, while having exclusive access to the indoor 50m Olympic pool, the indoor program pool and the indoor splash pool for the kids.

Attendees will also have access to a quiet space for those will sensory issues. The council is also encouraging attendees with friends, partners and families to relax, connect and join the race. Jody Toomey, chair of the Council’s LGBTQ Working Group is excited about the second swimming event.

“The council LGBTQ working group is absolutely delighted at the aquatics team’s decision to run another trans and gender diverse swim night,” Toomey said.

“The last one was so successful but it’s important to maintain the momentum of that success into future endeavours and we’re thrilled that it’s happening. We’re strong in our support of Wear It Purple and the services and support they provide queer youth. It’s sure to be an outstanding day.”

The first event had received transphobic and abusive messages on social media, which had prompted the post to be removed. After that incident, the council has taken steps to ensure the safety of the participants from online abuse.

“There have been some transphobic and abusive comments. Council is monitoring our social media carefully,” a spokesperson told City Hub.
