TINY RUINS – SOME WERE MEANT FOR SEA

TINY RUINS – SOME WERE MEANT FOR SEA

Tiny Ruins is Auckland-based singer songwriter Hollie Fullbrook’s recording name. You could be forgiven for confusing her nationality however as it seems that she sings with a hint of an Irish lilt. This is understandable as it matches the acoustic indie-folk style that is experiencing a renaissance of late. I suppose it’s similar to an Australian Country singer having a little bit of a southern twang to suit the genre. The focal point of Some Were Meant For Sea is Hollie Fullbrook’s smooth voice. Ably accompanied by gentle rolling finger-plucked guitars in the main. Despite the music and voice being soft and sweet it does and can carry a strong message or feeling. All the songs are good but most don’t have a very strong point of difference to the others. In saying that highlights are track three You’ve got the nerve I like, track seven Cat in the hallway and track eight Running through the night. A beautiful and strong album, especially considering this is Tiny Ruins’ debut LP release. Building on this platform I’m sure Hollie Fullbrook will be around for many recordings and years to come.
