Third Village

Don’t be shy,” the friendly waitress calls to a couple hovering in the doorway. Their smart choice would be to enter this urban yet homely Darlinghurst café, brightened by flowers and a colourful, full wall mural of Oxford Street. The waitress is en route to the communal table with a plate of Rossmore Farm free-range Eggs Benedict ($14.95) topped with hollandaise that looks so glorious; I am struck with a pang of order envy. Catching my crestfallen gaze she asks: “Want to change your mind? What you ordered is great too!” With considerable difficulty, I stick with my well-priced Ploughman’s Lunch Platter ($9.95) bearing tasty Black Forest ham, shiny pickles, crumbly cheddar, avocado-dotted salad and Sonoma toast. The flavoursome pig makes me earmark the Croque Monsieur ($8.95) as another must-have from their (civilised) all-day breakfast menu, some time in the near future. My dining companion makes short work of a Roast Pork Sandwich ($9.95) with interest added by apple slaw and a smear of sobrassada (pork and paprika sausage). An Iced Coffee ($5.50) and an Iced Mocha Latte ($5.50) both made on smooth Toby’s Estate coffee with a dollop of ice cream, help seal my newfound love for this café, rumoured to be birthing a William Street sister store soon.
