THEATRE: THE SWEETEST THING

THEATRE: THE SWEETEST THING

Life, death and Chaos Theory – just a few of the themes running through Verity Laughton’s new play. It is also the story of three sisters, each dealing with the shadows of their past, and a mother struggling to hold onto them. The success of this play relies on the believability of the family dynamic, something which the cast delivers incredibly well. There are real and recognisable moments of intimacy as we jump through time, glimpsing key points in the sister’s lives, along with the consequences of their decisions. Belvoir Street Downstairs is a small space but video, set design and flawless lighting seem to expand it, enhancing the quiet emotion of the cast’s performances. On the face of it, The Sweetest Thing is a beguilingly simple story, but beneath the surface are complexities and questions which speak to everyone. Moving and funny and beautifully staged, this is a must-see.
