THEATRE: THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED

Mitchell Green is on the verge of landing the script that will make him a star. There’s just one problem: he’s gay and along with his no nonsense agent, Diane, will do anything to keep it secret. Then he falls in love with the gorgeous rent boy, Alex, and suddenly his Hollywood dreams are less important. Anticipating disaster, Diane forbids the relationship. Mitchell is furious. When Alex’s previous girlfriend becomes pregnant, Diane finds her chance to create the ‘movie’ ending she had always envisioned for Mitchell. Initially, The Little Dog Laughed could be likened to something seen on prime-time, such as teen soap The OC. It is actually an absorbing and provocative work that seamlessly blends comedy, drama and social commentary. While the fates of each character drive the play, questions are asked about love, sexuality, happiness and the ruthless pursuit of it at all costs and in a manner that never heads down the rigid, one way road of polemic. Due to the sharp, yet visceral acting, it also hits all the right emotional spots, making it feel as though these characters are real. And that’s what good theatre should do.
