To prove I’m not devoid of Christmas spirit, I gathered up my latest BFF and her daughter, and headed to The Tea Room. It’s housed in what was once was the Grand Ballroom of the Queen Victoria Building. A head of golden curls and an elegantly layered pink party dress meant our high-energy dining room dynamo attracted more smiles than scowls from the (almost universally) female crowd. This was mostly thanks to staff thoughtfully seating them some distance from our table. Relieved, we settled into the plush, tall-backed seats for a Decadent December High Tea ($43/head). It arrived on a three-tiered silver stand. Miss Two, a shrewd critic in her own right, pronounced it “beautiful”; I’m inclined to agree. While she busied herself deconstructing cucumber sandwiches, her Mummy and I munched through the abundant range of treats. From crust-less ham sandwiches to delicate gingerbread macarons, there’s definitely a Christmassy flavour, though I’d knock back prawn and truffle cream tarts and crab mousse profiteroles all year ‘round. Humbug to the core, I was most taken with the golden-crusted airy scones, doused liberally with clotted cream and raspberry preserve. Atmospherically it’s not really buzzy, so Miss Two’s exclamations did prove loud. The thoroughly professional staff didn’t even flinch.
