Never argue with a pregnant woman with a craving for yum cha. My dining companion ate here weekly throughout her gestation and declares The Regal to be Sydney’s most consistent and best yum cha venue. If you’re new to yum cha, there’s a dim sum menu with photos. Staffing is strictly gendered; men in black jackets do drinks (only), women in ugly dresses do food, older poor men without jackets are only allowed to take plates away. Upsetting the order of things results in worse service; be polite but firm, don’t dilly-dally. Order barbecue from the table menu – the Roast Duck ($13) is crisp and delicious and arrives promptly. Steamed Garlic Prawn Dumplings ($5.80) are fragrant with fresh garlic shoots.  Deep Fried Rice Noodles ($5) come with two sauces, one is sesame based, the other dark sticky soy; add both and your palate dances – wickedly addictive. Lacy Deep Fried Taro Dumplings ($5) have a porky flavour but impress. Leave the fried stuff until last for a crunchy finale. Twenty dollars a head goes a fair way, and it’s hard to get stung so take a group and go wild. You will queue for a table, but militant efficiency makes it tolerable.
