The magical Coogee Carols are back this Christmas after being suspended for two years over the pandemic. Randwick Council announced the free event will go ahead on Sunday December 18 in Goldstein Reserve, right on the waterfront near Coogee Beach.

The carols have been running for over 20 years, with this year’s carols marking the 21st time the event has brought Christmas cheer to the eastern suburbs. Goldstein Reserve will welcome celebrity and local performances of a mix of contemporary and traditional carols, as well as a 7 piece band.

Large screens will also be placed around the event to help with visibility of performances.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker says the event has been “sorely missed” while it was canceled in 2020 and 2021.

“The Coogee Carols is a signature Council event” Cr Parker said.

“We’re looking forward to getting back out there to celebrate the season and enjoy the amazing community in which we live.”

With sweeping views over Coogee Beach onto the headlands in the distance, the carols capture the true feel of Aussie Christmas.

Council debates fireworks at event

Randwick Council voted to increase the budget for the 2022 carols by $90,000, taking the cost from $190,000 to $280,000 for this year.

A motion at the same meeting to consider removing fireworks from the carols was defeated. Council announced the fireworks will go ahead at the close of the carols.
