The Bucket List

The Bucket List
Image: With small bars occupying every nook in Bondi, the new tenants at the old Nick’s Seafood site have a different approach. It's spacious, they encourage parents (with $5 kids meals on Mondays); hell, they even encourage football teams with their $450 porchetta spit roast in the courtyard.

With small bars occupying every nook in Bondi, the new tenants at the old Nick’s Seafood site have a different approach. It’s spacious, they encourage parents (with $5 kids meals on Mondays); hell, they even encourage football teams with their $450 porchetta spit roast in the courtyard. Head chef Tom Walton (ex-Bistro Moncur) has a face for TV – not only was he a recent Ready Steady Cook star, but he convinced me to try my food nemesis, Brussels Sprouts ($9) – and he converted me too. They’re caramelized, charcoaled and served with hummus, so perhaps he cheated? I needed no persuasion with the ‘Bloody Mary’ Mussels ($19), scooping up lashings of aioli and spicy tomato mix with the fresh shellfish. While you’re likely to share the mussels and Brussels, the Mulloway Fillet ($26) served with artichoke and baby leek, should be savoured selfishly. With a glass of Clyde Park Pinot Noir ($9) you’ll definitely be on your own planet. Remain blissfully unaware with their heavenly desserts – the Salted Caramel Chocolate Tartlet ($12) is particularly divine. While their name and the packing-crate decor suggest they might exit this world at any moment, I was assured by owner Andy Ruwald that they won’t be kicking the bucket any time soon.
