Summer Fun

The end of the year is so close I can practically taste it. I’m keeping my eye on the prize by booking in some summer fun. The pretty, heritage-listed Dunbar House is offering up three hot January nights (9th, 17th and 23rd) of summer dining. We’re talking two ($55) or three ($70) courses with choices like a carpaccio of jamon iberico with sherry roasted baby beetroot and buffalo mozzarella. I’m considering going the whole hog, and catching a ferry to Watsons Bay too!

Nothing says summer like a barbecue, but not everyone’s got the space for one. Luckily The Keystone Group (barely a breath after their ever-so-successful Newtown Hotel renovation) have opened a rooftop barbie called Sweethearts on top of The Sugarmill! The beauty of it is, with its retractable roof it’s an all-weather spot where you can take in one of Jason William’s new range of shandy cocktails and eat something off the grill. My mouth is watering over shrimp in garlic butter against a BBQ Shandy of Little Creatures pale ale, barbecue sauce, lime and ginger beer with a salt rim.

You’ve still got the chance to fit in a mini-break at Jonah’s Restaurant and Boutique Hotel before their gourmet dine-and-stay packages expire on the 14th December. With clifftop views over Whale Beach, it’s sure to be a night to remember, what with inclusions like in-room spa treatments as well as a la carte dinners and breakfasts. You’ll dine on mains like Redgate Farm partridge breast and confit leg terrine with foie gras mousse and peach chutney before retiring to your room for handmade chocolates and Champagne Taittinger NV. If that’s not enough, the wine list boasts  more than 1000 wines…

Of course Xmas usually means a long food shopping list. You can inject a little fun into the process by taking an I Ate My Way Through Sydney Farms guided tour. They’ll take you to a range of farming communities, orchardists, apiarists and vegetable growers at the edge of the Sydney basin. At each stop you’ll learn about organic farming, while you load up on fruit, vegetables, honey, cheese, eggs, meat and bottled delicacies direct from the people who make them.
